Girl Riding Bike Struck by Car, Critically Injured in Newport Beach

Condition of victim was unknown.

A 14-year-old girl was critically injured when a hit-and-run driver slammed into her while she was riding a bike in Newport beach Tuesday night.

The crash happened just before 9:30 p.m., it was dark outside and witnesses said only the girl was struck in the collision on East Bay Avenue in the Bolboa Peninsula area.

'There were a couple of people that ran down the street to go see if they could catch the car, but it sped off right after it did it," Mark McCready said.

He added that is was a white Mercedes that hit the girl and a piece of the front headlight broke off.

It was unclear how fast the vehicle was traveling when it hit her. Investigators spent the day at the crash site combing through evidence.

Meanwhile, nearby residents couldn't understand why anyone would leave the teen injured on the road.

"Hit-and-run is a terrible thing," Alice Bubent said. "Why wouldn't you stay and try to help the girl? That's heart breaking."
